The internet has evolved since the early 1990s.  There have essentially been 3 waves:

•  Web1 was “Read-Only”: Static (little, to no interaction or change) pages in the 1990s, through the early 2000s.

You could browse information, but not interact much.

•  Web2 was “Read-Write”: Today’s social, interactive web (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube).

Users create and share content, but big companies control the platforms, your data, and the rules.

•  Web3 is “Read-Write-Own”: The next evolution, a decentralized internet built on blockchain (see Intro to Digital Asset TermsCornXRPL•Mar 24, 2026)

Users own their data, digital assets, and online identity, instead of renting them from corporations.

What Makes Web3 Different?

Web3 shifts power from centralized tech giants, to individuals and communities through:

•  Decentralization: Data and apps run on distributed networks of computers (nodes), instead of single company servers.

•  Blockchain: A transparent, immutable (unchangeable) digital ledger, that records transactions securely, without intermediaries.

•  User Ownership: You control your assets, via crypto wallets and cryptographic keys. Think true ownership of digital items, not just “uploading” them.

•  Trustless Systems: Smart contracts (self-executing code) handle agreements automatically - no need to “trust” a company.

•  Tokens & Incentives: Cryptocurrencies, NFTs, and governance tokens (Digital Assets) let users earn, trade, and vote on platform rules.

Simple Analogy: Web2 is like renting an apartment from a landlord, who can change the rules, or evict you. Web3 is like owning the house (and a stake in the neighborhood) with transparent, unbreakable rules.
