Mining is how many blockchains (like Bitcoin) stay secure, and add new transactions.
Miners use computers to solve complex math puzzles. The first to solve the “puzzle”, gets to add the next block. The miner earns new coins as a reward.
It’s competitive and energy-intensive, but it keeps the network honest. Not all crypto uses mining. Many modern ones use staking, or other “lighter” methods instead.

Proof-of-Work (PoW) Consensus:
Proof-of-Work is the original “vote” system for reaching agreement on the blockchain. Miners prove they did real computational work (the puzzles) to earn the right to add a block.
This makes attacking the network extremely expensive. It is very secure, but criticized for using a lot of electricity.
Newer alternatives, like Proof-of-Stake (used by Ethereum and others), are more energy-efficient…you “vote” with coins you already own, instead of burning power.
